Snowmobile Helmets Buying Guide

Snowmobile helmets have to handle cold wind, snow spray and bright glare off the snow. GDM's BEAST dual sport helmets are DOT certified and made for snowmobile riding, with a removable peak visor, a full face shell and an optional Bluetooth intercom. Every order ships free in the U.S. over $99, with free returns and exchanges.

Why a dual sport helmet works for snowmobiling

A dual sport helmet combines a full face shell and face shield with a peak visor. On a sled, the full face shell keeps cold wind off your chin and face, the shield blocks snow spray, and the peak cuts glare from the sun and snow. The same helmet also works for dirt bikes, ATVs, UTVs and street riding the rest of the year.

GDM BEAST snowmobile helmets

  • GDM BEAST: a lightweight composite poly-alloy shell, a removable peak visor and face shield, and two shields included (tinted and clear, or iridium and clear). It has 5-point ventilation, a removable, washable, antimicrobial liner and a double D-ring chin strap. Matte black, sizes S to 2XL.
  • GDM BEAST Bluetooth: adds a drop-down tinted sun visor behind a clear face shield, a moisture-wicking liner and the GDM HyperSonic Bluetooth headset with rider-to-rider intercom. Intermediate oval head shape, sizes S to 2XL.

Both are DOT certified to FMVSS 218. See all dual sport helmets and DOT approved motorcycle helmets.

Riding in the cold: fog, warmth and fit

  • Fit with your layers on: most riders wear a balaclava under a snowmobile helmet. Measure your head and try the helmet with the balaclava you'll ride in, using our helmet size chart.
  • Fighting fog: your breath fogs a cold shield. Open the vents, crack the shield at low speed, and keep your balaclava pulled over your nose so warm air goes down, not up.
  • Glare: use a tinted or iridium shield on bright days and a clear shield for low light, dusk and trail riding in the trees.
  • Batteries: cold shortens battery life, so charge your Bluetooth headset before every ride.

Snowmobile helmets with Bluetooth

The BEAST Bluetooth comes with the GDM HyperSonic headset: Bluetooth 5.0 with an intercom that connects two riders at up to 100 meters, single-button control for calls, music and GPS, up to 12 hours of talk time, and a waterproof design for riding in snow. See all Bluetooth motorcycle helmets.

FAQ

Snowmobile helmet FAQ

Can't find your answer? Contact our team.

Can I use a motorcycle helmet for snowmobiling?

Yes, and a DOT certified full face or dual sport helmet is a good choice, because it covers your face and chin from the cold. The GDM BEAST is DOT certified and made for snowmobile, dirt bike, ATV and street riding.

What's the difference between a snowmobile helmet and a motorcycle helmet?

Many helmets sold for snowmobiling are dual sport or full face motorcycle helmets with cold-weather extras, such as a breath box or an electric heated shield to stop fogging. The BEAST is a dual sport helmet without a heated shield, so in extreme cold, use the fog tips above.

Is a "snow machine helmet" the same as a snowmobile helmet?

Yes. "Snow machine" is what many riders in Alaska and the far north call a snowmobile.

Are GDM snowmobile helmets DOT approved?

Yes. Both BEAST helmets are DOT certified to FMVSS 218, with the DOT label on the back of the shell.

Can I talk to my riding partner on the trail?

Yes, with the BEAST Bluetooth. Its HyperSonic headset has an intercom that connects two riders at up to 100 meters.

What size snowmobile helmet do I need?

Measure around your head about an inch above your eyebrows and compare it to our helmet size chart. The BEAST comes in sizes S to 2XL. Try it on with your balaclava, and if the size isn't right, domestic exchanges are free.
