GDM BEAST Dual Sport Helmet Review: Street, Trail and Snow
Share
Most helmets are built for one kind of riding. The GDM BEAST is built for days that don't stay on the pavement: the commute in the morning, a dirt road in the afternoon and, in winter, a snowmobile trail. Here's a close look at the BEAST and the BEAST Bluetooth, what they do well, and who they're for.
The GDM BEAST at a glance
- DOT FMVSS-218 certified dual sport (adventure) helmet.
- Lightweight ABS/polycarbonate shell with an aerodynamic dual sport design.
- Removable peak visor for sun, roost and branches.
- Drop-down sun visor, so you can keep a clear shield on and flip the tint down when you need it.
- 2 shields included: clear, plus the tinted, iridium, chrome or gold shield you choose.
- Goggle compatible: take the face shield off and ride with goggles off-road.
- 5 points of ventilation at the chin, forehead and rear.
- Removable, washable liner and cheek pads, a double D-ring chin strap and a helmet bag.
- Matte black, sizes S to XXL, intermediate oval fit.
On the street
With the face shield down, the BEAST rides like a full face helmet. The shield keeps wind, rain and bugs out, and the drop-down sun visor means one shield works from sunrise to dusk. For long highway days, you can remove the peak to cut down on lift and buffeting.
On the trail
Off-road you breathe harder and ride slower, so the BEAST lets you open it up: take off the face shield, add your goggles, and use the peak to block roost and sun. The long chin bar gives you room to breathe. If you're deciding between this and a pure motocross helmet, read What Is a Dual Sport Helmet?
In the snow
The BEAST is one of our picks for snowmobile helmets. The face shield blocks snow spray and wind, and the sun visor helps with glare off bright snow. It doesn't have a heated shield, so read our tips on stopping shield fog in the cold.
BEAST or BEAST Bluetooth?
| GDM BEAST | GDM BEAST Bluetooth | |
|---|---|---|
| Helmet | Same DOT certified dual sport shell, peak and drop-down sun visor | Same |
| Bluetooth headset in the box | No | GDM HyperSonic (Bluetooth 5.0) |

Pick the BEAST Bluetooth if you want GPS directions, music and calls, or if you ride trails with a friend and want to talk without stopping. The HyperSonic headset comes in the box and installs in a few minutes; it isn't pre-installed. Already have a BEAST? You can add a HyperSonic headset anytime.
Shields and spare parts
Swap shields for the conditions. BEAST face shields come in clear, tinted, iridium blue, iridium gold and chrome, and there's a replacement BEAST peak visor too. Use a clear shield at night.
Who the BEAST is for
- Dual sport and adventure riders who split time between pavement and dirt.
- Riders of street-legal electric dirt bikes and other e-motos.
- ATV and UTV riders who want a shield for dusty trails.
- Snowmobilers who want one helmet for winter and summer.
- Commuters who like the dual sport look and the drop-down sun visor.
If you ride only on the street, a full face helmet will be a little quieter at highway speed.
Sizing
The BEAST fits an intermediate oval head, the most common shape, and comes in S to XXL. Measure your head and check the size chart. If you plan to wear a balaclava for snowmobiling, try the helmet on with it.
