Motorcycle Helmets for Big Heads: XL and 2XL Fit Guide
Share
If most helmets give you a headache, you're not alone. Plenty of riders need an XL or 2XL helmet, and many of them have been squeezing into a size too small for years. Here's how to measure a big head correctly, what XL and 2XL helmets fit, and how to find one that's comfortable all day.
Quick answer
Measure around the widest part of your head, about 1 inch above your eyebrows. On the GDM size chart, XL fits 61–62 cm (24 to 24 3/8 inches) and 2XL fits 63–64 cm (24 3/4 to 25 1/4 inches). If you're between sizes, size up. Almost every adult GDM helmet comes in 2XL; if your head measures more than 64 cm, look for a brand that makes 3XL and larger.
XL and 2XL helmet sizes
| Size | Head (cm) | Head (inches) | Hat size |
|---|---|---|---|
| L | 59–60 | 23 1/4–23 5/8 | 7 3/8–7 1/2 |
| XL | 61–62 | 24–24 3/8 | 7 5/8–7 3/4 |
| 2XL | 63–64 | 24 3/4–25 1/4 | 7 7/8–8 |

Measure carefully: big heads are often measured wrong
- Use a soft tape measure and place it about 1 inch above your eyebrows, just above your ears, and around the fullest part of the back of your head.
- Keep it level and snug, not tight.
- Measure three times and use the largest number, in centimeters.
Many riders who think they need a 3XL actually measure 63 or 64 cm and fit a 2XL perfectly. Full instructions are in How to Measure Your Head for a Motorcycle Helmet.
Size isn't the only thing: head shape
A helmet can be the right size and still hurt if its shape doesn't match your head. If you feel pressure on your forehead and the back of your head, you may have a long oval head; pressure on the sides suggests a round head. GDM helmets fit an intermediate oval head, the most common shape. Learn more in how to choose a helmet based on your head shape.
GDM helmets that come in 2XL
Every adult GDM helmet comes in 2XL except the Ghost Full Face, which goes up to XL. Popular 2XL choices include:
- Full face: GHOST2, VENOM and DEMON
- Bluetooth: the Ghost with Bluetooth Headset, GHOST2 Bluetooth and Bluetooth Motorcycle Helmet with 4 Shields; see all Bluetooth helmets
- Modular: the RAPTOR
- Dual sport: the BEAST
- Retro and open face: the REBEL and RENEGADE
On any GDM helmet page, use the size filter or the "Find your size" tool to see what's in stock in 2XL.
Fit tips for larger heads
- Snug is right. A new helmet should feel firm on your cheeks with no painful spots. Padding loosens a little with use.
- Watch for forehead pain. A sore forehead after 20 to 30 minutes usually means the helmet is too small or the wrong shape.
- Don't size up "just in case." A helmet that moves when you shake your head is less protective.
- Glasses and balaclavas: try them on with the helmet before a long ride.
- Modular helmets are easier to put on over a larger head because the chin bar flips up.

What if you need bigger than 2XL?
If your head measures more than 64 cm (about 25 1/4 inches), you need a 3XL or larger. GDM doesn't make sizes above 2XL right now, so look for a brand that offers 3XL to 5XL and check their size chart. Don't try to squeeze into a smaller helmet; a helmet that's too tight is distracting and uncomfortable, and riders tend to leave it at home.
Big head helmet FAQ
What size helmet do I need for a big head?
Measure your head. 61–62 cm is an XL and 63–64 cm is a 2XL on the GDM chart. Above 64 cm you need a 3XL or larger.
Is XXL the same as 2XL in helmets?
Yes. XXL and 2XL mean the same size.
Do bigger helmets weigh more?
Usually a little, especially when a brand uses a larger shell for its biggest sizes. Good fit and balance matter more than a few ounces.
Should I buy a 2XL if I'm between XL and 2XL?
Yes. On the GDM chart, if you're between sizes, choose the larger one.
