Clear, Tinted, Iridium or Chrome: Which Helmet Visor Should You Use?
Share
Most GDM helmets come with two or four face shields, and riders always ask the same question: which one should I use? The answer depends on the light. Here's what each helmet visor color is for, which ones to avoid at night, and how to cover every condition without carrying a bag of shields.
Quick answer
- Clear: night, dawn, dusk, rain, fog and cloudy days. The only safe choice in low light.
- Tinted (smoke): bright, sunny days.
- Iridium and chrome (mirrored): very bright sun and glare. They also hide your eyes.
- Gold: bright sun with a warm, high-contrast look.
- Drop-down sun visor: keep a clear shield on and flip a tinted visor down when you need it.
Helmet visor colors compared
| Shield | Best for | Night riding? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear | Night, low light, rain, overcast days | Yes | Always keep one with you |
| Tinted / smoke | Sunny days | No | Cuts brightness like sunglasses |
| Iridium (mirrored color) | Bright sun, glare off roads, water or snow | No | Mirrored outer coating reflects light and hides your eyes |
| Chrome / mirror | Very bright sun | No | Bold mirrored look; handle the coating gently |
| Gold | Bright sun | No | Warm tint with a gold mirror finish |
Clear: your everyday and night shield
A clear shield lets in the most light, so it's the only one you should use at night, at dawn and dusk, in tunnels, in rain and in fog. Even if you love your tinted shield, always know where your clear one is. Light fades faster than you expect on the ride home.
Tinted (smoke): the sunglasses shield
A tinted shield works like a pair of sunglasses: it cuts overall brightness so you're not squinting on sunny days. It's the most popular second shield. The catch is that it makes everything darker, so it's the wrong choice once the sun goes down.
Iridium and chrome: mirrored shields for glare
Iridium and chrome shields have a mirrored coating on the outside. They reduce glare from bright sun, wet roads, water and snow, and they hide your eyes from other drivers, which many riders like. Iridium comes in colors such as blue; chrome has a silver mirror finish. Because the coating is on the outside, clean these shields gently with a soft, damp microfiber cloth. Gold: warm tint, bold look
Gold shields combine a tint with a gold mirror finish. They're a bright-day shield that many riders choose for style as much as for the sun.
Can you ride with a tinted visor at night?
You shouldn't. Tinted and mirrored shields make it much harder to see road hazards, animals and unlit vehicles after dark. Many states also have rules about tinted shields or eye protection at night, so check your state's law. Our rule is simple: clear shield from dusk to dawn.
The easy fix: a drop-down sun visor
Some helmets have a built-in sun visor that flips down behind a clear shield. You ride with the clear shield all day, drop the tinted visor in bright sun, and flip it up at dusk without stopping. GDM helmets with a drop-down sun visor include the BEAST dual sport helmet, the GDM Bluetooth Motorcycle Helmet with 4 Shields and the RAPTOR modular helmet.
Which shields come with GDM helmets?
- 2-shield helmets like the Ghost, GHOST2, VENOM, DEMON and BEAST come with a clear shield installed plus a second shield in the color you choose.
- 4-shield kits like the GHOST Bluetooth with 4 Shields include clear, tinted, chrome and iridium, so you're covered for every kind of light.
- Retro and open face helmets: the RENEGADE takes a 3-snap bubble shield, and the REBEL takes goggles or a 3-snap flip-up shield in clear, light smoke or gold.

When to replace a helmet visor
- Scratches that cause glare or starbursts from headlights at night.
- A shield that won't stay open or closed, or a broken pivot.

Helmet visor FAQ
What color helmet visor is best?
There's no single best color. Use clear for low light and night, and tinted, iridium, chrome or gold for bright sun. Most riders carry a clear shield and one sun shield.
Is an iridium visor better than a tinted visor?
Iridium adds a mirrored coating that cuts glare and hides your eyes. Tinted is simpler and easier to care for. Both are daytime shields.
Can I use a mirrored visor in the rain?
It's better to switch to clear in rain and on dark, cloudy days, when you need all the light you can get.
Do GDM helmets come with a tinted visor?
Most do. 2-shield GDM helmets come with clear plus your choice of tinted, iridium, chrome or gold, and 4-shield kits include clear, tinted, chrome and iridium.
